Unlimited 23

A documentary about the Music Unlimited Festival 2009
Directed by Pavel Borodin
Germany / Austria, 2011, 123 min

“Unlimited 23” is the first full-length documentary about the Music Unlimited Festival, one of
the most renowned European festivals for jazz and improvised music, which is held annually
since 1987 in Wels, Austria. The film, commissioned by Kulturverein Waschaecht, the
organisers of the festival, is dedicated to its 23rd edition as of 2009.

That year’s programme was curated by the Japanese-American avant-garde musician
Ikue Mori. That year, Wels became the meeting place for many acclaimed members of the
international improvised music scene such as Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Zeena Parkins, Phil
Minton, Sylvie Courvoisier and Lotte Anker, with a notably strong contribution from female
performers. Several projects were formed especially for Wels and performed alongside the
existing bands like Speak Easy, SPUNK and Phantom Orchard Orchestra.

The film switches from fragments of all the sixteen concerts of the tree-day festival to
numerous interviews with the organisers and musicians, who talk about their projects,
improvisation, inner limits of their music and, of course, the unusual, almost homelike
atmosphere of the festival. The music played is unique and diverse: from the opening
performance of elaborately constructed John Zorn’s Cobra – to the cheerful closing done by
the Dutch ex-punk band The Ex, who celebrated in Wels their 30th anniversary.

Re-Vision
Italian Independent Cinema
selected by Rapporto Confidenziale / Digital Magazine about Cinematic Culture
in collaboration with Dobia Lab / Creative and Artistic Labs
A rich and heterogeneous selection, polymorphic and polyphonic. A mishmash of stories made of contradictions and differences, images and suggestions. Eight different works, with different techniques and styles, but sharing the same indipendent attitude and the need to create moving images regardless of everything and everyone. From the breathtaking animations by Virgilio Villoresi, to the “scratches” on film by Bennet Pimpinella, through the visionary madness of Giacomo Nanni and Gipi (screened for the first time outside Italy) and the faces and stories taken from the streets by Istituto Micropunta.
A kaleidoscope of dystonic images which we believe contains a wealth of brilliant insights and evidence of how the future and the present of what we used to call the seventh art is constantly able to reinvent itself while never losing its power to fascinate us. Because cinema is alive, and keeps fighting with us.
A part of this selection was shown at the X edition of DobiArtEventi 2011, from August 23rd to September 4th 2011, in Dobbia/Staranzano (Gorizia, Italy). www.rapportoconfidenziale.org/?p=14478

a film by Sergei Paradjanov Armenien 1968
35mm PROJECTION by NOMADENKINO
Farbe. 79 Min.
THE COLOR OF POMGRANATES

Sergej Paradjanov's sublime mosaic on the life, art and spiritual odyssey of the 18th century Armenian poet, Sayat Nova. The film is a collection of images and tableaux that interweave landscapes, villages, costumes, props and music to form a metaphorical history of the Armenian nation. It was banned in Russia for its religious sentiment and nonconformity to socialist realism. Paradjanov, a tirelessly out spoken campaigner for human rights, was convicted on a number of trumped up charges (and, tacitly, his homosexuality) and sentenced to five years of hard labor in a gulag. A wave of protest from the international film community led to his release in 1978.

Set in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the Great Depression, it is a comic musical about a competition announced by a beer magnate to find the saddest piece of music in the world. Musicians from across the world come to Winnipeg to try their luck in the competition, but the contest eventually boils down to a battle within one family: a patriotic Canadian father and his expatriate sons, one of whom represents the United States, the other Serbia.

Gramma is a puppet of iron, wood and bolts. He lives among bizzare fauna in a deserted, sterile and arid world beneath a cloudless sky. In this desolate land, signs and traces of a long lost civilization have survived.

Even the astronomical configuration of this environment seems to have been disturbed: the night begins when the moon covers the sun and ends when it departs. Every evening, when the eclipse creates a tempest of lethal and unatural light, Gramma darts home seeking refuge.

There he waits, in his laboraratory, for the cataclysm to pass and the night to arrive, finally to proceed in the creation of his projects…
